Tutorials: Saving and Optimizing JPGs for the Web

This tutorial will show you how to save images that are optimized for the web for faster downloads on slower modems.

  • Open your file in Photoshop (version 5.5 or above).
  • On the top menu bar, go to Image and choose Image Size from the drop down menu.
  • You will see an Image Size window like the one shown below.
  • Make sure Constrain Proportions is checked in the bottom left corner.
  • Make sure your resolution is set to 72 dpi.

  • Change the Pixel Dimensions as seen in the image below.
  • If your photo is a vertical shot, then change the height to 320 pixels.Do not change the width, it will change automatically. If your photo is a horizontal shot, then change the width to 320 pixels. Do not change the height, it will change automatically (For the purpose of the tutorial, we have chosen these numbers, but you can choose whatever dimensions best suit your needs).
  • Click OK.

  • Go to File on the menu bar and choose Save for Web.
  • Make sure the drop down menu under Settings is on JPEG, as shown below. You can set the Quality between 80-100. The goal is to keep the file size under 100k.
  • The file size is displayed in the lower left hand corner as seen in this image.

  • Click on Save and name your file.
